Hi, I'm Isaac Tanner-Dempsey, a New Business Development Consultant based in Christchurch, New Zealand.

​Also my boss was on my case. He expected multiple business cards at the end of each day. I was frustrated because he was busy renewing leases of existing clients while I was, pounding the pavements in the rain. Why couldn’t I find a better way to get more deals? I wanted so badly to be
successful.
I was sure I would be able to be more effective if I just let the phone do the walking. I started by making calls from a phone book, it wasn’t easy. Every new contact I made took two attempts: firstly to find the name of the decision maker, secondly to pitch. I was wasting hours of my day on the first call talking to people who could not make buying decisions.​

I needed have the names of the decision makers before I called the company. I’d never need to pitch to a receptionist again. I was excited by the prospect of cutting out the initial call and relieved I'd never have to waste time approaching businesses with no use for my services and I couldn’t wait to get out of the wet and let the phone doing the walking.

Being organised and doing your research can save hours of frustration and costly time and effort. Driving across town to buy supplies without phoning ahead to see if they’re in stock, checking trading hours, product availability or price comparisons costs time and money. It’s no different with sales. I know – I learned my lesson the hard way.

When I started out, I struggled when calling on businesses. I’d been a top grossing rookie rep knocking doors over summer in a consumer market. Now it was winter, cold and often wet and I was in a new sales job selling a high value, low volume product. My poor success rate led to considerable anxiety. Often when arriving in a new area, I was so nervous because I felt ill-prepared that I had trouble even leaving my car.
